The Secret Life of Bees
Sue Monk Kidd's ravishing debut novel has stolen the hearts of reviewers and readers alike with its strong, assured voice. Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the town's fiercest racists, Lily decides they should both escape to Tiburon, South Carolina--a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to a mesmerizing world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna who presides over their household. This is a remarkable story about divine female power and the transforming power of love--a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come. more

Touching short story!
This story was written very smart and grabbed it's audience with the main character Lily Owens. Automatically you feel attached to her and her story, you want to know how she comes away with a happy ending. In the end it is a bitter-sweet happily ever after which was more realistic to the story...

Not as overrated as you would expect! Well worth the read!
I am surprised how much I loved this - especially for a person who is so scared of bees! That and the fact that a few years ago, this book received a lot of hubbub... I tend to avoid these "pop" books. But I am glad that I did read this one. It reminded me a lot of the beginning parts of _Fried...

It is a great story of interracial love, conviction, and forgiveness.
Set in the American South, in the middle 60's--right in the middle of the racial unrest--The Secret Life of Bees, is a powerful story of coming of age. The ability to love to transform our lives, the longing for the universal feminine divine are all ways of addressing the wounds of loss,...

Inspiring book
An inspiring book indeed. Lily Owens, only 14 years old created a new life for her and their maid Rosaleen after leaving her sadistic father T. Ray. It was against all odds and I admired Lily's character. I loved August Boatwright. She is the epitome of a strong woman. She resembles the character...

Great Story
I was very pleased with the way the author wrote her story. I was excited to learn that she has another novel featured in the back of the book. It grew with intensity from page one. However when I got to the end of the book it was incomplete. I felt like the author was in a rush to tell the...

great read
This is a book I could not put down. It is far better than the movie, and I recommend reading it before seeing the film. It breathes southern life, and will have you dropping peanuts in your pop.

The Secret Life of Bees
I bought this book for my granddaughter as a birthday gift. She called me with raves about the story and was very excited about it. I had seen the movie and knew she would enjoy learning about the various aspects of that era as well as a young girl's coming of age during that time.

Bees
What an interesting little book. Good story. Unusual setting but very well written. You watched a little girl grow up. I hope a sequel will be in the works.
