The Appeal

In a crowded courtroom in Mississippi, a jury returns a shocking verdict against a chemical company accused of dumping toxic waste into a small town?s water supply, causing the worst ?cancer cluster? in history. The company appeals to the Mississippi Supreme Court, whose nine justices will one day either approve the verdict or reverse it.

Who are the nine? How will they vote? Can one be replaced before the case is ultimately decided?

The chemical company is owned by a Wall Street predator named Carl Trudeau, and Mr. Trudeau is convinced the Court is not friendly enough. With judicial elections looming, he decides to try to purchase himself a seat on the Court. The cost is a few million dollars, a drop in the bucket for a billionaire like Mr. Trudeau. Through an intricate web of conspiracy and deceit, his political operatives recruit a young, unsuspecting candidate. They finance him, manipulate him, market him, and mold him into a potential Supreme Court justice. Their Supreme Court justice.

The Appeal is a powerful, timely, and shocking story of political and legal intrigue, a story that will leave listeners unable to think about our electoral process or judicial system in quite the same way ever again.

*Yawn*, is it over yet?

I was extremely disappointed by this effort. I agree with the reviews that state Grisham basically threw something together, threw it against a wall just to see what would stick. Well, in my humble opinion, what stuck turned out quite...

Money Over Quality

John Grisham has joined "club" of TOO MANY best selling authors who write good stuff up front but once they are KNOWN put out poor quality novels to statisfy a publisher's demand for another book + (most important) get big bucks for bad...

Not quite Grisham's best

I loved this book with all the intertwined stories. However, Mr. Grisham left me hanging...did he want the reader to draw his/her own conclusions? I won't be specific about the way the book ended, but I was disappointed. Maybe I should...

yawn

it started out on an interesting note but soon petered out and by the end, I was depressed and no longer cared what happened. This is the first Grisham I'd read in years and will likely be the last. There are far better unsung writers...

Another strong social message from J Grisham

Another wonderful book by Grisham that makes you think about the interference of politics on justice and the consequences on the legal system and the people who become its victims. The cruel but unfortunately realistic end should make...
