Fingersmith
In Victorian England, an orphan girl is sent to a country estate to work for-and ultimately woo-its young heiress, on behalf of a mysterious benefactor known as Gentleman.
Fingersmith is the third slice of engrossing lesbian Victoriana from Sarah Waters. Although lighter and more melodramatic in tone than its predecessor, Affinity, this hypnotic suspense novel is awash with all manner of gloomy Dickensian leitmotifs: pickpockets, orphans, grim prisons, lunatic asylums, "laughing villains," and, of course, "stolen fortunes and girls made out to be mad." Divided into three parts, the tale is narrated by two orphaned girls whose lives are inextricably linked. Waters's penchant for byzantine plotting can get a bit exhausting, but even at its densest moments--and remember, this is smoggy London circa 1862--it remains mesmerizing. A damning critique of Victorian moral and sexual hypocrisy, a gripping melodrama, and a love story to boot, this book ingeniously reworks some truly classic themes. --Travis Elborough, Amazon.co.uk

A Great Read
After 143 reviews todate, what more can be said about Sara Waters' Fingersmith, other than this page-turner mystery simply is a great read. It has all the elements of a Dickersonian novel, without the verbosity of his writing style. The...

Wow
Sarah Waters does it again. I was never a fan of lesbian fiction until i read "Tipping the Velvet". I bought it on the recommendation of a friend and had no idea of it's content. I was enthralled with Ms. Waters writing and story telling...

Elegant Plot, Intriguing Characters, Haunting Sense of Place
I've read Fingersmith three or four times in the past month. Sarah Waters's plot is elegant in the way that Brian Greene says the universe is elegant. Her characters are believable and intriguing, and quite far removed from the cookie-cutter...

Fingersmith
It took me three weeks to read Fingermith, but I must confess I really enjoyed reading it. Developed in a very old-fashioned atmosphere, Fingersmith caught all of the reader's attention to the main characters: Sue Trinder and Maud Lilly.

Fantastic Book.
This is put down simply as a lesbian romance. That's a part of the book, but very oversimplified.

A wonderful novel chock full of historical detail. Sarah Waters has done her homework and given us a rare and fascinating glimpse inside the sexual practices of one segment of the working class in Victorian England. Sue and Maud are imperfect...

Compelling characters -- gripping plot
Deftly plotted with fascinating characters who wallow in the depths of psychological intrigue while illuminating the marginalized roles of women in Victorian England. The story is powerfully narrated by Sue and Maud, two orphaned women from...

Deceit, Love and Tragedy
I chipped away at the first half of this book for about three weeks, reading bits at a time but not being drawn into it as a "page turner". It just didn't grab me initially. Finally, with a chunk of dedicated "read time" during an 18 hour...
