Les Mis?rables (Signet Classics)
In this story of the trials of the peasant Jean Valjean--a man unjustly imprisoned, baffled by destiny, and hounded by his nemesis, the magnificently realized, ambiguously malevolent police detective Javert--Hugo achieves the sort of rare imaginative resonance that allows a work of art to transcend its genre. more

Poor packaging!
The book itself was fine, but the entire end of the box was open when UPS brought it to the door. If the driver hadn't kept it upright in the truck and while handling it, it would have slid right out of the box. Not what I've come to expect from Amazon's shipping.

It's a classic for a reason
I've seen the musical several times, seen the movie (w/Liam Neeson), and watched the DVD musical many more times. I finally decided to pick up the book and read it. Bear in mind I am a software engineer and mostly read technical books/sci fi. This kind of book is quite a departure from what I...

Les Miserables---The best commentary on humanity, ever!
I have been a fan of this translation of Les Miserables for many years. In fact, my hard bound copy is lovingly falling apart. I read it just a little at a time to actually savor what is being said about not only the political climate of the early 19th century but about humanity in general....

rIchest reading experience you can get
Just forget whatever qualms you may have about a book this thick. Get it, start it, and get ready for one of the richest, most satisfying reads you can experience. I made the mistake of reading an abridged version first, and while it was a good book, (I think one reviewer opined that it's hard...

..."And So, Fantine Was Watched...."
The title of this review reflects one of the most critical moments in the life of the young French peasant woman, Fantine, the ill-fated female counterpart of Jean Vajean, the protagonist of Victor Hugo's 1862 epic tale about a convict's redemption. Valjean stole a loaf of bread in a desperate...

Not Completely Miserable... Could Have Been Wonderful
The plot is magnificent, the characters enticing, the imagery very real... but somehow everything is lost in Hugo's tangents. If I could give it 3 and 1/2 stars I would, because if you skip his rants, the book is quite good. Hugo has a tendancy to give the history of EVERYTHING that Jean...

Rediculous size paperback
If I had known this book would have so many pages I would not have ordered. Being as thick as it is makes it very difficult to hold, and the binding edge will be broken before halfway through reading. A size that would cut the page count in half would be helpful, especially to people with small...

one of the best books of all time1
Though there are many vantage points and themes of this book, the most important is that of a man released from prison setting out to prove that someone who has gone down the wrong path can ultimately change and reverse his wrong-doings. When I was 15, I figured that because it was such a large...

"The Nobility Of A Great Heart, Condensed Into Justice And Truth, Strikes Like A Lightening Bolt." VH
One of the most memorable books that I have ever read. It takes you to another place and time. I was not only enthralled with the historical backdrop but the story captivated me more than many other classics. Most unforgettable is the character of Jean Valjean who is the noble redemptive man...

"The Nobility Of A Great Heart, Condensed Into Justice And Truth, Strikes Like A Lightening Bolt." VH
Having just completed Les Miserables, it is with bending knee that I bow in gratitude to the author of this book. Hugo does not disappoint and takes great care in tying all strands together. Be patient and stick with it. Nothing truly good comes with ease. Take your time in reading this book....
