100 Love Sonnets: Cien sonetos de amor (Texas Pan American Series)

Against the backdrop of Isla Negra - the sea and wind, the white sand with its scattering of delicate wild flowers, the hot sun and salty smells of the Pacific - Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda sets these joyfully sensual poems in celebration of his love. The subject of that love: Matilde Urrutia de Neruda, the poet's "beloved wife." As popular in the Hispanic world as the poet's renowned Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair, One Hundred Love Sonnets has never before been published in its entirety in English translation. The reason for this astonishing neglect may lie in the historical circumstances that surrounded Neruda's "discovery " by English-speaking readers. In the United States he came to popularity during the turmoil of the sixties, when Americans needed a politically committed poet, and much of Neruda's canon answered that need. But, in his native Chile and throughout Latin America, Neruda has always been cherished as dearly for the earthly sensuality and eroticism of his love poetry as for his statements of political belief. To know this work, then is to understand the poet's art more thoroughly. This bilingual edition of One Hundred Love Sonnets reproduces the text of the 1959 Spanish original en face with Stephen Tapscott's graceful English translation.  more

100 Love Sonnets: Cien sonetos de amor (Texas Pan American Series) (Spanish Edition)

This was a Valentine's day gift for a significant other who has taught himself Spanish. I appreciated that the book had both the English and Spanish version of each poem on facing pages. That is a great learning tool. It is also great for people who love to see how someone interpreted the...

Tapscott's liberties

Am reading through Pablo Neruda's 100 Love Sonnets for a second time. A lot of the Amazon customer reviews for this book mentioned that the translator, Stephen Tapscott, produced English versions laden with inaccuracies and liberties and errors. I must admit: I haven't studied Spanish since...

Awesome!

It is a masterpiece of latin-american literature. It is a new experience into the depths of the human heart. It has unique metaphors and similies that picture the most passionate and simple type of love!

When you cannot find the words to express how you are feel!

Without a doubt, truly one of the best love sonnets. Huge fan of Pablo Neruda and thrilled to have a copy of this book.

Honorable

Pablo Neruda is possible one of the truest masters of the written word. His poetry, ranging from affairs of the heart to affairs of state are always relevant and somehow touch you. Although the translation of Sonnet 17 done in this book isn't my favorite, the overall experience of the book is...

A poor translation

Neruda is great, no doubt about it. He even shines through in places here, despite these clunky and artless translations of his beautiful poems. If you really want to read a translation which retains Neruda's passion, try W.S. Merwin . Being a fine poet in his own right he has a light hand and a...

Great earthy poetry

It's surprising to some (who call me grumpy!) but in my private time I love to settle down and read poetry. These "100 Love Sonnets," written in the 1950's by Neruda for his wife, are some of my favorites. I like Neruda because of his earthiness ("You sing and your voice peels the husk of the...

Not the greatest

I've got to say, I was very disappointed with this book. I have Captain's Verses and The Essential Neruda, which had a couple of the sonnetts in it that I loved, but all 100 aren't so great! I also know Spanish and don't like the translations too much.
