Neue Horizonte: Introductory German

Neue Horizonte employs a four-skills approach to German that stresses communicative competence, cultural awareness, and mastery of language structures. Students learn the language through solid grammar presentation, useful exercises, and an excellent selection of literary readings.

Pedagogy throughout the text reflects current trends in spoken German, such as updated Dialoge sections which introduce vocabulary in the context of everyday conversations. The overall chapter structure now falls into 5 major sections: Dialoge, Grammatik, Lesest?ck, Nach dem Lesen, and Almanach for better manageability, and the Videoecke section appears in the Workbook/Lab/Video Manual. End-of-chapter pedagogy such as Situation aus dem Alltag and Zum Schluss appear within the body of the chapter, rather than at the end to give students a chance for instant review. Sections such as Worschatz vocabulary and Almanach, which provide detailed information in English or authentic material in German, correlate with chapter themes.

• Info-Austausch (Information Gap) activities in most chapters expand on the communicative aspect of the text by asking students to work in pairs and share information to complete a chart or set of questions.
• Nach den Lesen includes a new feature, Schreibtipp, to provide suggestions for approaching the writing exercise?Schreiben wir mal!?or offer practical tips on standard writing practices.
• Realia-based exercises give students authentic German materials to work with.
• A poem in Chapter 2 is accompanied by annotations in the instructor's edition to help in course planning.
• Readings in Chapters 5, 7, 8, and 13 have been revised so students learn from updated materials.
