Mystic and Rider (Ace Fantasy Book)
Award-winning author Sharon Shinn has been hailed as "the most promising and original writer of fantasy to come along since Robin McKinley" by Peter S. Beagle. Now, she weaves a new world wrought with magic and mayhem, in which the fate of a troubled land may rest in the hands of those few who would remain loyal to their king-and each other. more

It hooked me, despite being fairly average
Mystic and Rider is the first in a series of fantasy novels staring a group of friends who are lead by Senneth a woman with mystical powers. Her team is composed of three other mystics and two soldiers. They are on a quest to discover the feelings of the people in the kingdom. On the way they...

Formulaic fantasy romance
Mystic and Rider is a fantasy romance. The title tells it all: There's a mystic, and a rider, and they have a boy-meets-girl story set in a fantasy milieu. In fact, the title's a bit of a spoiler, because once the mystic and the rider had been introduced, and they had negative chemistry, I knew...

Underdeveloped
I came to this book with fairly high expectations, having read and enjoyed Shinn's novels The Shapeshifter's Wife and Summers at Castle Auburn. I found it to be a decent read, but rather jarring all the way through. The characters are likeable enough, but they seem to blab out all their backstory...

Mystic & Rider
First book in a series by Sharon Shinn. Good steady pace with plots and twists. Magic, mayhem, romance, sword fights, a little something for everyone.

Enjoyable characters, but not much to remember
This is a so-so book, although Shinn's writing is fluid and easy to read. The characters are engaging, and I cared what happened to them. The backstory of the world was mildly interesting, although Shinn could have invested a big more there. The magic system felt weak to me. It isn't clear (for...

BORING!
I was very disappointed in this book and could not finish it. Shinn's angel books are so much better.

Mystic and Rider
First book in the Twelve Houses Series; well done with believable characters and a good story line.

Publishers Weekly Review:
While not as original as Shinn's popular Archangel trilogy, this first of four in the Twelve Houses series, set in the land of Gillengaria, is tailor-made for the growing audience of fantasy fans who like a good juicy romance. Elderly King Baryn sits on a shaky throne, wed to a strange childless...

"Fun for all ages"
This book absolutely had me hooked in the first chapter. The way the characters are woven together is magnificent. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes a little fantasy mixed with a flare of drama. Excellent read I am on book 3 in the series. Book 2 ( 13th house ) is just as good as this...
