A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)
Here is the first volume in George R. R. Martin?s magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin?s stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.
A GAME OF THRONES
Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom?s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.
Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones. more

Truly an American Tolkien - Epic series indeed!
It has been many years since I've enjoyed a great epic fantasy/sci-fi novel. This immersive experience is on par with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Yet it brings a gritty adult modernism to it without spoiling the experience. For any fan of well written epic fantasy/sci-fi - this book and the...

Great book, don't read it...
It is a great book, maybe one of the best fantasy/science fiction books I have ever read. It is well-written, interesting characters, and a well-developed plot with lots of twists, turns, and foreshadowing. So why not read the book? Because it is part of a series, and I don't think George Martin...

Nostalgic review...made me fall in love with fantasy, a masterpiece of not just the genre, but fiction in general
Don't want to make this seem a self serving review but I need to say it. I was not a fantasy reader before I came across A Game of Thrones. Closest things to it I read were some of Stephen King's horror-fantasy stuff, Harry Potter and Terry Pratchett's half-fantasy, half-satire Discworld...

The start of something incredible
This is the best book I've read in a long while. At 800 pages in paperback, it's not a short, light read, but I can't wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the series. After a slow start, where the reader must try to digest some basics of the vocabulary, setting, and cast without a lot of help,...

A different sort of fantasy world
Having been worn out from the regular fantasy fare, I've taken a pretty long siesta from reading most hardcore fantasy. After a while it all tended to blur together, especially the ones that are from big series. After getting this recommended to me umpteen times from my bookstore customers, I...

Groundbreaking
I first came across A Game of Thrones ten years ago when I was still in high school. At that time I was still not entirely comfortable with the English language, and I was going through the library picking up easy books to read, which usually tend to be in the fantasy section. The kind of books...

Totally enthralling... and just as good the third time as the first!
I first enjoyed this epic fantasy over 10 years ago. I credit it with bringing to life my intense love of fantasy that has kept me reading constantly since that time. Through all those years, very few books (maybe 5/500) grabbed me and held my attention so strongly as this one. I just finished...

No One to Like
I'm glad that so many people have found a new fantasy series that they can like. However, I just about threw the first book away when I was done. Yes, he writes well. But, honestly, why read a book without a SINGLE redeeming character? There is no one here to like. There is no one to relate...

Strong out of the gates, but horrendous down the stretch.
I have to say that I took a friend's advice and read this book with high hopes. Those hopes were supported through the first; oh, 300 pages. Martin brings his characters to life very well at first glance. His method of plot development and storytelling - jumping between character viewpoints - is...

Excellent series!
This series was recommended to me by a friend and I fell in love with them. They're not always the happiest of books, but that keeps me guessing as Martin seems willing to part with some general fantasy norms. Definitely a good read.
