A great, first hand, experience of the Spanish Civil War. Great for begginners.
This should be the essential English read when it comes to first-hand experiences on the Spanish Civil War, Republican side. Orwell writes about every single thing he experienced about many aspects of the Republic during the Civil War. The struggles of ideologies, the society, the environment,...

Read this if you are traveling to Barcelona
I read Orwell's memoir in preparation for (and during) my second visit to Barcelona. Orwell is so English in his outlook, and clearly loves the people of Catalonia. The book is an excellent review of many of the issues involved in the Spanish Civil war, and how people's fates were decided so...

A great first hand account of war.
This book is THEE Spanish Civil War book, as far as I'm concerned. I read it with the hopes of getting an idea of what the Spanish Civil War was about, because it was very confusing to me. But it seems that Orwell wrote the book with the purpose of dispelling the confusion. He simply tells his...

Foot Soldier's View of War and Politics
HOMAGE TO CATALONIA has two narratives. The first discusses the experiences of Orwell from December 1936 through June 1937, when he fought as a common soldier in a socialist (POUM) brigade against the Fascists, recuperated from a nearly fatal sniper's bullet, and then fled Spain as a British...

Reliable History, First-Hand Descriptions
This is possibly the most outstanding book ever to come out of the Spanish civil war. Written by the famous English author, who was seriously wounded as a soldier fighting on behalf of the Loyalist cause, his observations show that the revolution was consciously betrayed and undercut by the...

Orwell the Objective
My mother spent a frightful childhood in revolutionary Barcelona near the cathedral "Sagrada Famila"...FAI territory. Orwell's account is extremely close to what my mother recounts. A horrible period of history...the precursor to WWII.Orwell did not let ideology hamper his account of the facts....

Orwell re-visited
Homage to Catalonia is Orwell at the zenith of his journalistic style--brutally candid in its description of the battlefield and the politics of the Spanish Civil War in which he participated as a volunteer foot soldier against the military insurgency. The Civil War was, of course, a prelude to...

A Supplement and an Obituary
"Homage to Catalonia" has long passed from the shelf for current events to the shelf of primary historical sources. No one can study the Spanish Civil War without encountering it. On that basis, it's a five-star book; all primary sources should get five stars. As a reading experience, it's not...

Homage, Take 2: what about Aragon?
After re-reading Catalonia, some 20 years after my first encounter, I am disappointed. I do not think that this is Orwell's best work. It has many of his strengths, mainly the elegant, efficient and straightforward prose that he developed so impressively, but there are some flaws. Main flaw in my...
