The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl

The dust storms that terrorized the High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since.
Timothy Egan?s critically acclaimed account rescues this iconic chapter of American history from the shadows in a tour de force of historical reportage. Following a dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region, Egan tells of their desperate attempts to carry on through blinding black dust blizzards, crop failure, and the death of loved ones. Brilliantly capturing the terrifying drama of catastrophe, Egan does equal justice to the human characters who become his heroes, ?the stoic, long-suffering men and women whose lives he opens up with urgency and respect? (New York Times).

In an era that promises ever-greater natural disasters, The Worst Hard Time is ?arguably the best nonfiction book yet? (Austin Statesman Journal) on the greatest environmental disaster ever to be visited upon our land and a powerful cautionary tale about the dangers of trifling with nature.

I Am So Thankful Egan Wrote This Book

Egan's extensive research and attention-holding writing style presents the personal suffering and strength of the people of the great plains, and the ecological catastrophe of this era, in a way that kept me riveted. An avid reader, I am recommending The Worst Hard Time more highly than anything...

"Can't-put-it-down-History"

Said Walter Cronkite in one of the book's blurbs, and I found it to be true. Riveting. My only complaint is that I would have liked to have read more detail about the daily life of these people. What did they do, day-to-day, besides fight the dirt, if the crops had died? How did they spend their...

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Wow, I love American history and I love farming. But this is one of the most boring books I have muddled through in a long, long time. He developed the setting very well and built the characters so that the reader would know them personally. But the book dragged on and on much like the Dust...

Absoultely fascinating

History comes alive in this book about little known (to me at least) event in American history. The author has obviously done his research and manages to make this interesting, where in lesser hands it could have been a boring read.Highly recommended!

Hard reading but harder to put down.

This book brought such insight into a time in our history that does not get much personal attention. To take history and make it as personal as this takes a very talented writer as well as an avid historian and someone with a true heart.

A subject better served in novel form.

There wasn't enough here for a book. And it was too much for a single magazine article. (A series, maybe?) I found 'Worst Hard Time' lost its effectiveness at various points, made getting to the end more of a chore than I'd expected. However...However, because I was totally unaware of this aspect...

Too many loose ends blowing in the wind

Many sections of this book have really stayed with me. The author did a good job of weaving cultural and personal history together to create a compelling storyline, but he seemed to focus on "The Worst" and forget to complete the premise of "Those who survived".An example are Egan's wonderfully...

Must Read History

My family was part of the Volga Germans that migrated to Central Kansas in the 1870's. This book is a masterpiece of history and tells the story of people that in many cases drifted off with the mighty dust storms of the 1930's. The book should be read by everyone as we consider the potential...

Eyeopener

I read my recent purchase "The Worst Hard Time". Such a tragic historical account of the great dust bowl. My parents, sister and brother almost starved to death on their farm in Northeast Nebraska during the depression and the drought. Some of their farms animals sadly did starve. This book...

Exceptional

A timely and true tale of the environmental mayhem that displaced a generation, and a history lesson so well written it reads like outstanding fiction. But it's not!
