Creating your own modern duvet covers is an affordable and easy way to turn your outdated bedroom décor into something fresh and modern. You can change the look and feel of your entire room by simply changing the bedding. Instead of buying entirely new comforters, you can make your own. Duvet covers are a great solution because they are essentially a large fabricated pocket that fits around your old comforter.
The first step is to choose your fabric. One of the most convenient aspects of making your own covers is that you can choose any design to cater to your personal taste, regardless of the size. Whether you choose fabric that’s striped, polka dotted, floral, pink, red, blue, black, casual, or luxury, the end result will be personalized, so choose your design that fits your style. In terms of choosing material, cotton is a safe bet. Anything too slippery will bunch up.
After choosing the right fabric, you should measure your fabric. The standard size of a twin bed is 72 X 90, full is 84 X 96, queen is 90 X 102, and king is 102 X 108. If the fabric is 60 inches wide, you’ll need 10.75 yards of fabric for a twin-sized duvet, 11.25 yards for a standard, 11.75 for a queen, and 12.5 for a king.
Now that you’ve got the right sized fabric, join the sides together leaving ½ inch zigzag seams. Next, it’s time to place buttons. You’ll want six large buttons, but make sure the buttons match your fabric. Measure 3.5 inches from each edge and 1 inch from the top of the fabric and each button should be 19 inches apart. Throughout this process, it’s important to use pins to keep your fabric in place and make sure the pattern matches.
