Breed All About It Season 2 - Episode 9: Cairn Terriers

Each episode focuses on one of up to 150 canine breeds. In each episode we will select one or two dogs that serve as our main guides through the colorful world of purebreds. Through interviews with owners, trainers, judges, breeders and veterinarians, we will explore the development of a "top dog". Episode 9: Kathy Stabler has a cute little terrier named Walker. Walker is an active dog of the 90's. He not only hikes and runs agility, he's a therapy dog and once a month he gets all spruced up to visit the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind where the children delight in brushing his coat, making him speak, taking him for walks and petting him. Walker represents the happy disposition of the Cairn Terrier. The Montgomery County Kennel Club hosts one of the most prestigious dog shows in America--The Montgomery County Terrier Show. We get a glimpse of many different terrier breeds and their owners before focusing on the Cairn specialty. To explore the terrier's true heritage as an earth dog (terrier derives from terra, the Latin word for earth) we attend an Earthdog Trial in New Jersey. We watch Cairns get down and get dirty as they "go to ground" in man made tunnels to hunt "prey"-- in this case, caged rats. Lydia Hutchinson got her first Cairn before she was born! She's now 58 years old and can truthfully say she's been around Cairns all her life! She introduces us to Groucho, a Cairn that took her 17 generations to produce!
