(Edited February 18th by osmangormus) Developer Edition is designed for development and testing purposes. That's why there's NO restriction on functionality. Only restriction is on LICENSE. I find MS SQL Server 2000 so reliable, so fast and also...
PROS: It's powerful, easy to manage, easy to control. For me Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer are the best tools, while working with databases.
CONS: Works on Windows only. You have to download and update it with Service Pack 3a which is about 167MB, totally. But you know you can wait for Yukon, too.

For the price, you can't beat this full featured version for learning purposes. Microsoft actually understands that for people to learn the software, they must be able to afford it.
PROS: Price
CONS: It has met all of my requirements.

Needed a robust product for development of mulitple language data. Microsoft SQL Server has proven to be stable, reliable, and consistent. Administration is straight forward. Hardware requirements are fair.
PROS: UNICODE Support. Multiple languages. Easy administration.
CONS: Limited to Microsoft platform.
