Stitch 'N Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook

Knitting is hot, with 4 million newcomers in the last few years joining a core group of 38,000,000 knitters nationwide. And these are primarily young, creative, connected chicks with sticks who are coming together in living rooms, knitting cafes, and chic yarn stores, and making everything from funky hats to bikinis.

In Stitch 'n Bitch, Debbie Stoller-founder of the first Stitch 'n Bitch knitting group in New York City-covers every aspect of knitting and the knitting-together lifestyle: the how-to, the when-to, the what-to, the why-to. Writing with wit and attitude (The Knitty-Gritty, Blocking for Blockheads), she explains the different types of needles and yarns (and sheep, too) and all the techniques from basic to fancy, knit to purl to cast-off. She also shares her special brand of corrective surgery for when things go wrong, and offers fun and informative sidebars on such topics as how to find the best yarn for less, how to make a buttonhole, knitting etiquette, and what tools to keep in your knitting bag. At the heart of the book are forty stylish patterns: Alien Scarf, Big Bad Baby Blanky, Mohair Hoodie, Kitty and Devil Hat, Cell Phone Cozy, and Wonder Woman Bikini. And for anyone interested: how to start a Stitch 'n Bitch group.

Teach yourself to knit from this book!

I am a first time knitter, and I was looking for a book to teach me how but also wouldn't get me made fun of. This is it! Don't let anyone tell you its not possible to learn from a book b/c it is. The book is well written,...

Every knitter should have this book!

This book is a must for every knitter. I learned to knit as a teen, but hadn't done it in many years. The explanations and illustrations in this book helped me pick it right back up again. The author is not only informative, but funny,...

This is the first book I have purchased in my efforts to learn how to knit. I enjoy the history of knitting and the pictures of all the tools but I think more pictures/drawings would be useful. I bought an accessories pack but have...

This book taught me how to knit

I really wanted to learn how to knit. I loved the idea of making warm hats and scarves from twisting string. I am 30 years old, have no sewing experience and I do not come from a gene pool of crafty knitters so the odds were stacked up...

Great patterns, unhelpful directions for a new knitter

As someone just learning to knit, I found the directions and illustrations for how to do the basics lacking. For example, there is only 1 picture for a four-step process, and the instructions are missing details such as which way to wrap...

Boring and Dull patterns, muddy instructions. Total waste of cash.

What a waste of paper this book is. The first half is just her droning on and on about the history of knitting, her family history of knitting, her grandmother's death bed, and a bunch of other useless anticdotes and her trying to talk...
