The caller ID etc. works only when batteries are installed. Fresh batteries are drained in about a week. I gave up replacing the batteries because it's so wasteful. My opinion of Panasonic really diminished when I discovered how poorly engineered...

good volume, speakerphone, headset jack which seems hard to find in a corded phone, and it has caller id. The negatives are it requires batteries. This is not for backup only...it is soley powered by batteries. There is no power source to plug in....
