The Giving Tree 40th Anniversary Edition Book with CD
"Once there was a tree . . . and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk . . . and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

A Great Book
This is a GREAT children's book that teaches a lot about giving and realizing the cost to others when they are generous to you. My 7 year old cries everytime she reads it, and she loves it.

The Giving Tree
The Giving Tree is a favourite book of mine--one I've been trying to get hold of for many years. A beautiful story about the relationship between a tree and boy as he grows older. The illustrations are very simple, but the main feature of the book is the beautiful story. I'm so glad I have it as...

Incredible
The tree didn't think the boy selfish or cruel. All she knew was the feeling of complete joy when he was there.I think that all adults can see themselves in each of the characters.I had never heard of this book until one week ago and I was fortunate that the local library had a copy.I have read it...

Not a Fairytale....
I think this is a beautiful book. Thought provoking and a conversation starter. I don't have children but give it frequently as a gift. I agree with many other reviewers that this is an appropriate story that depicts real life interactions. I don't think its about female submission or male...

Sad, but not inappropriate
I mostly agree with the negative reviews, except for one thing: sadness is part of our education. I found this to be a fine antidote to the constant storm of superficial happy endings from Disney. My girls adore this book much more than any of the princesses and I do believe they clued in to the...

A Mirror to your LIfe
I just want to be quick and to the point. This book has so many iterpretations based on where you are in your own life.My own take on this book, is that it is a book about dysfunctionality and what happens when you lose respect for others and yourself in the process. This is not an example of...

Not Really a Children's Book
I read The Giving Tree last night for the first time. I'd heard about it for years, and happened to watch a bizarre documentary on IFC (or HBO) about Heidi Fleiss (the Hollywood madam) hiding out in Parumph, Arizona, telling the interviewer through her tears that The Giving Tree was her favorite...

Not the right message for my kids
I have to say, I don't understand the rave reviews for The Giving Tree. I think the messages in children's books resonate in their little souls for years to come. I try to give them an appropriately broad and thoughtful array. I'm not trying to get too pop-psych here, but, what's the message of...

A new interpretation for a new era
This book has had a LOT of reviews. With that being said, I quickly tried to browse through them to see if my take on it had already been posted...I didn't see it. So please forgive me if this is a duplication of a previous review. I have had this book for a very long time and still read it -...
