Marked: A House of Night Novel (Book 1)

The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed.  In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change.  Not all of those who are chosen do.  It?s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling.  She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx.  But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers.  When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

Like really?

I started to read this book because Amazon suggested to me and like many other readers, the cover was intising. From the get go, I couldn't stand the shallow characters. The characters were stereotypical high school girls, but truly, not many high schoolers talk that way. The writing was...

Makes formulaic romance novels look classy & sophisticated

For an exceptionally open-minded parent with an MA in English & fondness for vampire lore, this book was a bitter disappointment. I pre-read it in hopes of passing it along to my pre-teen who's busily devouring the Twilight series. No deal! I don't know what turned me off the most: the...

A Vampire Harry Potter

I read this book because I loved the twilight series and the sookie stackhouse books and this came highly recommended. I am not a YA nor am I a prudish woman but the language even shocked a sailor-mouth such as myself. But I don't think that was what bothered me as much as the fact I felt this...

Solid vampire book.

It took me a long time to decide on reading this book. I finally decided to pick it up after one of the teens I mentor suggested it saying she really liked the series.I wasn't really sure what to expect with this novel, to be honest. Which I think is a good thing because I wasn't disappointed...

Marked Review

Admittedly deeper than my last read (Glass Houses by Rachel Caine), it's still in the same basic genre that I felt like reading at this time. Even though Zoey is a bit of a Mary-Sue character (practically perfect in every way), I still liked her, and it probably helped it was written in first...

Another fun vampire read

I would rate this more of 3.5 stars.I would not rate this book as highly as Vampire Academy or Twilight but it was still a good read. It's hard not to like Zoey and her good girl yet not going to let anyone push her around attitude. Aphrodite (and who can like someone who picks that as her own...

I agree with YUCK!

I have to agree with YUCK. Wow, I'd hate to have my teenager reading this. Foul language kept me from reading to the end. And people wonder why the Twilight series was a hit? Are all of the books in this series as R-rated or just Marked? Too bad it could have been more enjoyable.

I'm a House of Night fan now!

I found out about P.C. Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast through the amazing website/blog called Free Book Friday, that is founded by author Jessica Brody. I'm so glad that I read and even heard the wonderful podcast interview of Jessica and P.C. talking about her House of Night series....

Very, Very Good!

Ok, I will start off by saying that the beginning is week. I almost gave up on it than, but a friend convinced me to keep reading. And I am so, so glad I did. You could almost describe the writing style as "corny" or "immature", but somehow, the Casts made it work. And ridiculously well at that....
