Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA
Now Pulitzer Prize–winning author Tim Weiner offers the first definitive history of the CIA—and everything is on the record. LEGACY OF ASHES is based on more than 50,000 documents, primarily from the archives of the CIA itself, and hundreds of interviews with CIA veterans, including ten Directors of Central Intelligence. It takes the CIA from its creation after World War II, through its battles in the cold war and the war on terror, to its near-collapse after 9/ll.
Tim Weiner’s past work on the CIA and American intelligence was hailed as “impressively reported” and “immensely entertaining” in The New York Times.
The Wall Street Journal called it “truly extraordinary . . . the best book ever written on a case of espionage.” Here is the hidden history of the CIA: why eleven presidents and three generations of CIA officers have been unable to understand the world; why nearly every CIA director has left the agency in worse shape than he found it; and how these failures have profoundly jeopardized our national security.
At Smarter.com, we aim to ensure we give you the most sound buying advice possible. With our 'Cumulative Product Rating' system, in order for a product to receive a rating score, it must have a minimum number of ratings to qualify.
This system is not intended to diminish the value of products with a low number of ratings and reviews, they're great, and hopefully very helpful, but if you want our advice, we want to make sure that the product you're thinking of buying has been rated and reviewed by enough shoppers like you to be a valuable indicator of product quality.

A Pessimistic Burial Oration for American Intelligence and Covert Operations Run by the CIA
In the James Bond movies, James Bond saves the world virtually single-handedly. He often gets high-tech gear from Q and military backup coordinated by the CIA after the agents follow him until Bond locates the bad guys. Based on Legacy of Ashes,...

Money and guns make the world go 'round
To measure the change in public attitudes toward the CIA, consider two TV programs: "I Spy" from the 1960s and "The Simpsons." The former, starring Robert Culp and Bill Cosby as the consummate daring, bright covert defenders of Western culture,...

THE BAY OF PIGS FIASCO
It is about time someone as credible and prestigious as Tim Weiner bring to the American people the truth about the much glamorized image of the Central Intelligence Agency. Five well deserved stars go the "Legacy of Ashes" as far as I'm...

An Incredible Book!
"Legacy of Ashes" is the record of the first 60 years of the CIA. It describes how the most powerful country in the history of the Western civilization has failed to create a first-rate spy service. The CIA concealed its covert actions to most,...

A Phoenix From The Ashes?
Pulitzer Prize winning NY Times reporter Tim Weiner has produced the first and only history of the CIA based entirely on archives and documents. It's grim reading.

Having lived most of this history
To me, this book was the equivalent of a William Manchester history book but on the narrow subject of the history of the CIA.

Legacy of Ashes- The never never land of the CIA
This is a well researched and well written book. It takes you from one misadventure to the next. I had a hard time putting it down. (I am glad I finished it before the last Harry Potter book arrived.)

Interesting compendium...one painful flaw
However depressing, I thought this book was easy to read and was a necessary review of the agency with a "great reputation but lousy record" (I paraphrase one comment in the book).

A very interesting and needed account
For too long the CIA has both been blamed for all the world's problems(i.e, the U.S is responsible for every terrible event in the world from Communist China to Stalin, Pinochet and beyond), and at the same time the CIA is seen to be completely...
