The Lump of Coal

This is a story about a lump of coal who can think, talk, and move itself around.

Is there a more charming holiday tale to behold? Probably, but Lemony Snicket has not written one.

Glad I didn't buy the book.

I saw the cover and thought "The Lump of Coal" looked offbeat and funny. The book was offbeat, but not in a funny way. Is this book supposed to be funny for kids or adults? Sadly, I think it misses the mark on both counts. It's too sophisticated for kids, but not sophisticated enough for...

Not your typical Christmas Miracle tale, but that's a good thing!

I absolutely loved this book, and I laughed out loud all the way through! I have read all of the other Lemony Snicket books and I may actually like this one the best because it has all the best elements (humor, pathos, vocabulary education) in a nice, concise form. And, it actually has a happy...

Miracles are like Pimples.

Lemony Snickets brings another story just for the holidays and with even more odd, but loveable characters. Written in almost the same fashion as 'Unfortunate Events' this story teaches us that even if a lump of coal can find a miracle, you can too!Brett Helquist returns with Snickets and...

Book is Blessing for A Bad Day

This is a book about miracles and perspective. 'You don't always get what you want, but you get what you need,' a wise songwriter once wrote. This book is the perfect gift for anyone who feels that things NEVER turn out right for them. Like me. I bought this book for myself because I love...

clever and a nice addition to Christmas tales

I used to teach 5th grade and first read this to my class when it came out as a newspaper feature. I purchased 4 copies this season to share with young family members.

Fun for parents and kids

I love this book - it's very clever and very funny, yet still heartwarming with a very positive message. I thought the Lemony Snicket books were dark, and while this has a little darkness in it, it's much more optimistic then I expected. This isn't for very young children (it's bit verbose for my...

LOL in Borders Bookstore

I agree with Boni Ashburn in her review of this hysterical book.......I picked it up at a display in our local Borders and by the end of the book I was in stitches. I used my coupon and bought the book that instant. Our family appreciates this type of off the wall humor and kooky illustrations....

Interesting story with odd characters

Reviewed by Madeline McElroy (age 7) for Reader Views (9/08) I thought this was a very interesting story with a very odd character named Lemony Snicket, a piece of coal. All I could imagine was this grumpy piece of coal, so I started reading the book using a scratchy voice to be Lemony. This...

A small, flammable miracle

This book made me laugh until I cried. It really did. Yes, I'm a children's book author too. No, gosh no, I don't know Mr. Lemony Snicket. And I've never even read any of his other books! But I sure am going to read every one of them now. This isn't a book for the youngest picture book crowd- they...

Disappointing

Compared to the marvelous "The Latke who Couldn't Stop Screaming," this book is a let down. I felt like I was reading a high schooler's imitation of Lemony Snicket's style. The main character was not particularly endearing. The plot was predictable (in a bad way.) The word play was not as...
